Google will launch ChatGPT competitor Bard
Google will launch Bard, an AI chatbot, in the coming weeks. CNBC’s reporting is confirmed. OpenAI’s ChatGPT will challenge Bard.
LaMDA, the company’s big language model for dialogue applications, powers Bard. In a blog post-Monday, Google announced that “trusted testers” will test the conversation technology before it goes public.
As part of its “code red” response against Microsoft-backed chatbot ChatGPT, Google tests some of these capabilities with employees. “Apprentice Bard,” a chatbot, and question-and-answer search desktop designs were incorporated.
“Soon, you’ll see AI-powered features in Search that distill complex information and multiple perspectives into easy-to-digest formats, so you can quickly understand the big picture and learn more from the web: whether that’s seeking out additional perspectives, like blogs from people who play both piano and guitar, or going deeper on a related topic, like steps to get started as a beginner,” wrote CEO Sundar Pichai.
The business explained NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope discoveries to a 9-year-old using Bard.
The product tests followed an all-hands meeting when employees highlighted worries about the company’s AI competitive edge given ChatGPT’s growing popularity.
Google’s AI leader, Jeff Dean, told staff that the business moves “more conservatively than a tiny startup” because it has more “reputational risk” in supplying incorrect information. He and Pichai hinted that Google might release similar goods this year.
Google pioneered AI, but its main business is web search. In recent weeks, leaders have begun asking more staff for input on efforts.
The business stressed Monday that it will need thorough testing, adding “we’ll combine external feedback with our own internal testing to ensure sure Bard’s solutions satisfy a high bar for quality, safety, and groundedness in real-world information.”
